A $900 Gaming PC - June/July 2024 - Great for 1440p

I’ve had this build idea laying around for a while, and finally had the funds to build it! It’s a great 1440p performer. You can expect 60+ FPS in any single player game out there right now, and 120 FPS in eSports. It also looks great.

An easy $400 PC - June 2024

I tried to build the cheapest brand new gaming PC last month. It can play ESPORTS and PvE games well enough with the right settings; but it did leave me a little frustrated. For nearly the exact same price, you can double your performance by purchasing a second hand CPU and a second hand GPU. That inspired this PC build. Here’s what I recommend.

Why These Parts

CPU — Ryzen 5 3600

The 3600 is great value at $60 used. It has 6 cores and 12 threads, which is especially helpful for UE5 games like Fortnite that like a lot of cores. It also supports PCIe 4.0 x16 and is only 65 watts; so it works great with weaker CPU coolers like the $9 Wraith Stealth.

MOBO — AsRock B450M HDV R4.0

The price makes this motherboard a great purchase. $60 for overclocking, undervolting, and unlocked PBO control. If you upgrade to a Ryzen 5000 CPU in the future, you will find these features useful.

RAM — 2x8GB DDR4 3200 MT/s CL16

Get the cheapest 16GB kit that has a memory access latency of 10 ns or less. You can put the RAM specs in this calculator to figure it out. I generally recommend 3200 MT/s with a CAS latency (CL) of 16 because it’s cheap and well tested.

SSD — 500GB M.2 NVME

You want at least 500 GB. M.2 is the form factor, basically a large stick of gum. It requires 0 wires so that helps with cable management and keeps the build process simple. PCIe interface is WAY faster than SATA, and it’s only a few dollars more.

GPU — GTX 1660 6G

This is the fastest GPU I can find around $100 on the used market that’s readily available. Always check your local markets first, but the 1660 is a generalized recommendation. I

Case — SAMA S88 BK

This case has two 120mm front fans and one rear 120mm fans for $41 with shipping on Newegg right now. It has a power supply basement, good cable routing holes, and decent airflow. It’s just super functional.

PSU — Thermaltake Smart 500W

I’ve used this power supply maybe a half-dozen times now, and it has worked fine for every budget build.

Explanation

Here's a straightforward $700 Gaming PC that can handle any game at 1080p, high-settings today. The 6-core/12-threaded Ryzen 5 5600 still offers great performance, and it can be ugpraded to the legendary 5800X3D for even more gaming performance when you're ready. Pre-built Base

Firstly, you want an office PC that has the following:

1. i5 8000 CPU or better

2. 8GB of RAM or better

If it doesn’t have an SSD, that’s OK. If it does, great! We’re probably going to upgrade it anyway.

The total for this PC is $690 to $735. I recommend the Ryzen 5 7500f here, but the 7600 will do just as well. If you buy an A620 board, you cannot manually tune precision boost. Your CPU will hit 95 C out of the box (this is normal and safe), but if you don’t like that, follow this tutorial to add a temperature limit.

If you can’t grab the power spec power supply, then pick-up a power supply from EVGA, Seasonic, Corsair, CoolerMaster, or Thermaltake. Check out this power supply tier list for specific recommendations (I highly recommend it!). Choose a 450+ watt unit from Tier C or above.

Overclocking the RX 580

Run Unigine Superposition with the video card at stock and write down the GPU score.

Right click on your desktop then select AMD Radeon Settings > Performance Tab > Tuning. Select the grey “Custom” button on the right. Enable everything and move the power limit slider as far to the right as possible.

Start with a frequency of 1300 MHz on States 4 through 7 and a voltage of 1150 mV on States 4 through 7. Run Unigine Superposition. If the system crashes or the score decreases, bump down your frequency 25 MHz. If the system succeeds and the score increases, bump your frequency 25 MHz. Once you’re happy with the score, do the same thing with your voltage, BUT this time DECREASE it by 25 mV.

Then go to your memory section.

Start with a memory frequency of 2000 MHz on State 2 and a voltage of 875 mV on State 2. Repeat the same process, decreasing the voltage and increasing the frequency incrementally until you’re satisfied and/or it’s as far as it can go without being unstable.
